the reed altar

digital altars for mentors i must thank for altering the trajectory of me as a designer.

Once upon a time, young artists spent every waking moment learning how their masters approached craft.

Some enjoyed poached eggs for lazy breakfasts, others added extra turpentine to thin paint. Apprenticeship has endured for centuries because masters don’t just pass down techniques— they transmit a way of seeing, & living in this world.

For most of history, & particularly during the renaissance period, artists learned as protégés. In the Italian bottega, young apprentices spent years living & observing their masters... the manner in which they mixed paint, spoke to patrons, approached the question of a soul.

Artists flourished with individual attention before the educational format was gradually replaced with formal art academies in the 19th century.

While i loved college, i often learned very little from classes. Every meaningful step in my career as a designer can be traced back to someone who took the time to teach me, inspire me, challenge me, or believe in me (often before i believed in myself)! It was through these people that i realized more was possible than i ever knew.

Reed altar is my thank-you note to them.

Design is a craft best learned through relationships.

All interactions becomes much more enriching when assuming positive intent and that the other person has something to teach you.
